چکیده

Abstract No-till cropping systems with cover crops can improve soil health, but often rely on glyphosate, which is a contentious herbicide. In this study, we investigated whether system based the direct sowing of sunflower ( Helianthus annuus ) in dead mulch roller-crimped hairy vetch Vicia villosa could be competitive where glyphosate also sprayed to terminate crop and control weeds. We hypothesized that optimum timing roller-crimping would key eliminate requirements while maintaining performance. 3-year on-farm experiment, compared three termination stages (early: pre-flowering; Intermediate: beginning flowering; late: 70% flowering) rates (Nil, half full, i.e. 1440 g active ingredient per hectare). Vetch biomass increased progressively from early late stages, ranged between 414 658 m −2 . Higher was correlated lower weed biomass. Treatments had inconsistent effects diversity composition, largely determined by interactions treatments seasonal (different years) or local factors fields). Glyphosate-based seemed select for aggressive species, no clear species filtering effect ecological functional traits detected. Shannon H’ positively grain yield below dry threshold 150 Crop stage failure without application. However, acceptable, being at par 15% higher (mean first second no-glyphosate glyphosate-based treatments. gross margins showed same trend (+33% treatments). This time, shows targeted no-till result equal agronomic economic performances as addition glyphosate.

New roller crimper concepts for mechanical termination of cover crops in conservation agriculture

Rollers crimpers have been used in conservation agriculture to terminate cover crops; however, excessive vibration generated by the original straight-bar roller design has delayed adoption of this technology in the United States. To avoid excessive vibration, producers generally reduce operating speeds that increase the time needed to perform the field operation. The objectives of this research...

Weed Control with Cover Crops in Irrigated Potatoes

Field experiments at Oakes, ND, USA in 2010 and Carrington, ND, USA in 2011 were conducted to evaluate the potential for cover crops grown in the Northern Great Plains, USA in order to reduce weed emergence and density in irrigated potatoes. Treatments included five cover crop treatments and three cover crop termination treatments. Termination of cover crops was done with glyphosate, disk-till,...

Influence of Seeding Ratio, Planting Date, and Termination Date on Rye-Hairy Vetch Cover Crop Mixture Performance under Organic Management

Cover crop benefits include nitrogen accumulation and retention, weed suppression, organic matter maintenance, and reduced erosion. Organic farmers need region-specific information on winter cover crop performance to effectively integrate cover crops into their crop rotations. Our research objective was to compare cover crop seeding mixtures, planting dates, and termination dates on performance...

Evaluation of Delayed Glyphosate Burndown in No-Till Soybean

Application of a preplant or preemergence glyphosate burndown is routine in most no-tillage production systems of annual crops, however, time of application may influence overall weed control and grain yield. Six field trials were conducted over a three-year period (2008, 2009 and 2010) near Ridgetown, Ontario, Canada to determine the effect of glyphosate burndown application timing in glyphosa...
